Spinning Records (100)

lyrics

Let’s go for a ride downtown;
I will show you
All the places I have grown
And some places I have yet to learn

How they’ve made me.
I see the Spinning Records
They taunt me as I try to
Go about my business…

And I get up to go to school or work
Day in and day out and day in and day out
Over and over again.

There are men praying on the 100
There are girls singing in the subway
I am crying on the streetcar

Another one let me down.

I caught my reflection in the
Window of the subway train.
See these dark circles nervous twitches -
All markers of my early aging.

There are lines inked into my skin.
Not from the passing of years
But the stress of living here.
Never sleeping, always questioning

How are we living?

As I’m breathing in
The exhaust of our industry.

There are men praying on the 100
There are girls singing in the subway
I am crying on the streetcar

Another one let me down.

From my living room
The sun and planes go down
The sky she puts on
A black toxic sequin gown.
